Lindholm’s season continues on Fafe’s asphalt roads
29 September 2020
Team GRX’s Emil Lindholm and Mikael Korhonen will take part with TGS Worldwide's Škoda Fabia R5 Evo in the third FIA European Rally Championship competition of the season in Portugal. Lindholm, who is the test driver for MRF Tyres, is sixth in the European Championship standings after two events.

The European Rally Championship series will continue next weekend in Portugal. On the original calendar the Portuguese ERC rally was meant to be Rally Azores, driven in the Azorean Islands this summer, but due to travel restrictions caused by COVID-19 pandemic it had to be cancelled. The place of the original Portuguese ERC event will be taken over by Rally Fafe Montelongo, driven on asphalt roads, which has never been driven as a European Rally Championship competition before.

The newcomer of the European Rally Championship series will be driven in Northern Portugal around the city of Fafe. The area is famous for the Power Stage of the WRC Portugal and its famous jump. Emil Lindholm and Mikael Korhonen, who are participating in the rally as the test drivers for the Indian tyre giant MRF Tyres, will start on the route next Saturday with the starting number 5.

“There is an interesting competition ahead of us all which no one has any previous experience. The route is being competed purely by pace notes. For example the ERC in Rome clearly showed that those who had previously driven that rally had big advantages compared to the others drivers in the narrow and challenging special stages”, Lindholm says.

Lindholm's team TGS Worldwide sent Škoda on a trip to Portugal already as early as last week’s Wednesday.

“In Portugal we will test MRF's asphalt rally tyres under competitive conditions with the latest development version. Our car is going to be on the site on Tuesday and on Wednesday we will drive a tyre test near Fafe. The weather forecast has promised rain for the weekend so it will definitely make the rally very interesting. I haven’t driven with MRF’s rain tyre before so that will become familiar to me here”, Lindholm says.

Lindholm expects a clear driving performance from himself so that he can gather as much information as possible to benefit the tyre manufacturer. Success, especially in the standings for young drivers under the age of 28, is also of interest. The organizer of the rally has announced that the competition will be driven without an audience.

“It would be important for MRF that I would also get points. We are sixth in the European Championship overall competition and third in the junior class. It is also going to be interesting to see how the rally organizer will keep the fanatic Portuguese rally fans out of the special stages”, Lindholm says.

The third competition of the European Rally Championship, Rally Fafe Montelongo, will start on Saturday 3rd of October from Fafe at 10:30 (EEST) Finnish time. The program of the first day of the competition includes nine special stages with a total length of 95.79 km. The rally will continue on Sunday with another nine special stages total length of 87.15 km. The winners of the rally are expected at the finish line on Sunday evening at 21:30 (EEST) Finnish time.
