Sensor fault dropped Lindholm from the podium in Kouvola
07 March 2021
Team GRX’s Emil Lindholm and Mikael Korhonen finished fourth in the Kouvola FRC-rally after losing more than a minute due to a sensor fault. After the last winter rally, the pair is third in the Finnish Championship points.
A disappointing sensor fault on the second to last special stage, the longest of the rally (29.8km), took Lindholm’s chances to drive for second place of the competition. In the hassle with the sensor Lindholm lost 1:08 minutes of extra time and dropped to a fourth place.
The last Finnish Rally Championship event of the winter season, which was driven in a blizzard, was surprising because of the heavy snow. Cars going first on the special stages suffered from the role of a snow plower and cars after them benefited from clean roads.
“It was an electrical fault that was already messing with us on the previous special stage. It was a gearbox position sensor that gave an incorrect signal and cut off the ignition from the engine. Because of it we missed over a minute of time and second place on the podium. We were able to fix the fault before the last special stage”, Lindholm tells.
“It snowed a lot and we suffered from it like all the first cars on special stages. With the exception of the last two special stages, the rally was going good for us. We held the third position in our championship standings. It was a fighting victory for us”, Lindholm says.
Lindholm tells they went on the route with a conservative tyre choice.
“This winter we have tripled the number of rallies driven on MRF winter tyres. We have reached the fastest time and driven steadily to the top spots of the special stages. We have moved forward in the development of the tyre. Even before the start of the season, I had a strong confidence that MRF would be able to produce a competitive tyre also for winter conditions. Third place on the points is a good spot to start the summer season”, Lindholm sums up.
The Finnish Rally Championship series will move to the spring break from Kouvola. The next time the drivers will battle of the Finnish Championship points is 28-29th of May in Länsirannikko-rally driven in Lieto.
