Lindholm retires from the first place of the WRC3-class in Arctic Rally Finland
28 February 2021
The fate of the Team GRX’s Emil Lindholm and Mikael Korhonen was sealed in the second special stage of the second day of the World Rally Championship Arctic Rally Finland, driven in Rovaniemi, on Saturday morning. The Finnish duo was not able to continue the competition with the Rally2 rule on Sunday.

Emil Lindholm, who led the WRC3-class in the WRC Arctic Rally Finland in Rovaniemi after the opening day, started the second day of the competition by increasing his lead to 12 seconds. The Finnish duo, driving team TGS Worldwide’s Škoda Fabia R5 Evo, started the morning’s second special stage, Kaihuavaara (19.91 km), with confident minds.

About 1.1 kilometres from the start of the special stage, Lindholm's braking on the top of a hill lightened the car more than expected and as a result his Škoda’s back hit a snow bank on the left turn followed by the hill. The hit made the front of the car turn and also hit the snow bank, which had a tree growing along the road.

“Unfortunately, our competition was cut short. I am so sorry for my team and our partners that we lost good WRC points” Lindholm sights.

“The narrow road section at the beginning of Kaihuavaara special stage was snowier than expected and very slippery. When braking over the hill, the back of our car slid towards the snow bank. Our speed wasn’t impossibly too fast, but as a result of the hit, the front of the car also turned to the snow bank and straight in to the tree. It just happened to be a snow bank that had a tree on it, which ended our rally”, Lindholm says.

Lindholm says that TGS Worldwide inspected the damage to his Škoda at the service area. The result was that Lindholm was not able to continue the rally on Sunday even with the Rally2 rule.

“The car's radiator broke, the right face bar of the engine compartment was bent, as was the ear of the engine mount. We will not be able to repair these damages here, so we needed to retire. Upsetting, there’s nothing else I can say at this moment”, Lindholm commented in the Rovaniemi service area.

The Škoda Fabia R5 Evo driving duo clocked the fastest times on both special stages of the opening day in the WRC Arctic Rally Finland, driven in Rovaniemi. In the overall situation of the rally, the Škoda’s duo was driving on the number one spot of the WRC3-class and 14th in the overall competition of the rally.
