Lindholm brings Indian MRF rally tyres to the Finnish Rally Championship
13 January 2021
Team GRX’s Emil Lindholm and Mikael Korhonen will compete the Finnish Rally Championship series, including the season opener driven in Rovaniemi, with Indian MRF Tyres.
Lindholm, driving with TGS Worldwide’s Škoda Fabia R5 Evo, is pleased with the overall schedule built for the 2021 season. The 24-year old promising rally driver aims to succeed in both national and international rallies.
“We have tested our car and MRF's new studded tyres and everything seems to be in order for the new season. MRF's new studded tyres felt good and in the finishing tests we got to try few different adjustments to our car. In the beginning of the year Škoda classified new parts for our car but they are not available for our use yet. However, the feeling we have of starting the Finnish Rally Championship season is good. On Friday we will see how fast the other drivers go”, Lindholm says.
Lindholm, who won the Arctic Lapland Rally two years ago, expects a tight competition of the number one spot on the podium.
“The weather has been predicted to be very cold on Friday, which traditionally causes snow dust on the roads. Time will tell if this will happen and will it slow down our driving. I think the situation in SM1-class is the same for everyone. The roads are in a good and fast condition. We have a real, snowy winter rally ahead of us”, Lindholm says.
“We won here a couple of years ago so we are aiming for the number one spot once again. We will see on Friday if our speed is enough and then make decisions according to that. In Rovaniemi the points are going to be increased Finnish Championship points, which will play a decisive role in who wins the championship. An important rally ahead of us thinking about the whole entity of the season”, Lindholm points out.
In accordance with the COVID-19 regulations the super special stages of the Arctic Lapland Rally in Mäntyvaara and Ounasvaara, as well as all public events related to the rally such as the opening and finishing ceremonies in the center of Rovaniemi, have been cancelled. The starting and finishing ceremonies of the rally will take place in the Mäntyvaara service area to which the public is not allowed to access. All roads leading to special stages are closed along the main roads and the parking is prohibited on the sides of the roads. The public will therefore not be allowed to enter the special stages and most of the roads will not be plowed open.
For Lindholm and Korhonen competing under COVID-19 restrictions is a familiar task.
“We already drove several European Championship rallies on the same operating principles last season so this is not new to us. The atmosphere in the rally is a little different when there is no audience and a pity for rally fans. It really doesn’t bother us too much, because our driving is not based on entertaining the audiences but on making good results”, Lindholm reminds.
The total length of the two-day Arctic Lapland Rally, opener of the Finnish Rally Championship series, is 715.45 km after three cancelled special stages. The modified route includes seven special stages with a total length of 216.44 km. The rally will start on Friday, January 15th at 12:00 from the Mäntyvaara service area. The program for the first day of the rally has three special stages (84.86 km). For the night break the first cars will arrive in Mäntyvaara at 20:00.
The rally will continue on Saturday morning from the service area at 7:00. The closing day program includes four special stages with a total length of 131.58 km. The first competitors are expected to the finish line of the rally in Mäntyvaara on Saturday night at 18:20.
